Backdoor Hike to Petra: A Complete Guide to the Trail from Little Petra to the Monastery

Petra, the rose-red city carved into sandstone cliffs, is one of the world’s great archaeological wonders. While most visitors enter through the iconic Siq, often crowded with tourists, there’s a quieter, more adventurous path. The back trail from Little Petra—also known as Beidha—offers a breathtaking alternative that blends nature, history, and solitude and is considered one of the top-rated hiking trails in Jordan.

Starting the Hike: What to Expect

The Backdoor hike to Petra begins discreetly behind the souvenir stalls at Little Petra’s car park. As you set off, the desert opens up before you, scattered with Bedouin tents and the occasional curious goat. The path starts off easy, following soft jeep tracks, before winding through rugged mountains and unveiling breathtaking views. Be sure to ask your guide to point out the ancient Stone Age Village along the way—it’s a hidden gem many hikers miss.

If you’re short on time or prefer a less strenuous start, you can take a shuttle jeep to bypass the first 5 kilometers of the hike.

A Journey Through Time:

This trail is more than a path to the Monastery—it’s a journey through history. Picture Nabataean traders walking this very route centuries ago, carving their legacy into the land. Along the way, look out for traces of their presence: ancient watchtowers, weathered cisterns, and silent stones that whisper stories of a long-lost world.

The Grand Reveal:

As you ascend, the landscape shifts, growing more rugged and dramatic with every step. Then, suddenly, the Monastery appears—carved high into the cliff face, monumental and serene. It’s a reveal that stops you in your tracks. Bathed in golden sunlight, this architectural wonder commands reverence. Unlike the bustling main entrance, here you may find yourself alone with Petra’s masterpiece, savoring a rare moment of stillness and awe.

Tea with a View:

After the hike, unwind with a cup of tea at a cozy Bedouin-run café near the Monastery. It’s the perfect reward—savoring panoramic views while soaking in the genuine warmth of Jordanian hospitality. Let the moment linger, as stories are shared over mint tea and time seems to slow in the shadow of ancient stone.
