Unveiling Petra’s Secrets: The Enchanting Hike from Little Petra to the Monastery

Petra, the rose-red city carved from sandstone cliffs, is a wonder of the ancient world. But there’s a way to experience its majesty beyond the Siq, the traditional entrance thronged with tourists. The back trail from Little Petra, also known as Beidha, offers a unique and rewarding adventure.

The Hidden Path:

The trailhead starts discreetly behind the souvenir shops at Little Petra’s car park. Soon, desert landscapes unfold, dotted with Bedouin tents and the occasional curious goat. The initial path is gentle, following jeep tracks, before weaving through mountains and revealing a breathtaking panorama. Ask your guide to show you the Stone Age Village on the way.

If you wish to shorten the walking distance, you can skip this part and take the shuttle jeep which will shorten the distance by 5 KM.

A Journey Through Time:

The trail isn’t just about the destination; it’s a journey steeped in history. Imagine Nabataean traders traversing this very route centuries ago. Keep an eye out for remnants of their presence, like watchtowers and cisterns, whispering tales of a bygone era.

The Grand Unveiling:

As you ascend, the landscape transforms, culminating in a dramatic reveal. The Monastery, carved high into the cliff face, comes into view – a sight that will leave you breathless. Take a moment to soak it in, appreciating the awe-inspiring architecture bathed in golden sunlight. And unlike the crowded main entrance, here you might just have this masterpiece all to yourself for a few precious moments.

Planning Your Backdoor Adventure:

  • Distance: The trail is approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) to the Monastery, with an additional 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) to reach Petra Visitor Center in Wadi Musa. A total of 6 hours.
  • Difficulty: The hike is rated moderate. The first half is fairly flat, but the latter part climbs steadily. Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, especially during the hot summer months.
  • Considerations: The trail is unmarked, so consider hiring a good guide to not miss on any of the nice spots and information. Sun protection and a hat are essential. Remember, you’ll still need a valid Petra entrance ticket for this hike.
  • Our Recommendation: To ensure a magical experience for our guests, we book them the night before at one of our partner camps. This ensures guests are well-rested and ready to embark on their Petra adventure the following day.
